No Plastic Bag Saturday? Or Not?
Today I came across something really ironic... It's Saturday and I was grocery shopping in Jusco... As usual, every Saturday is a "No Plastic Bag" day which was meant to promote a more environmentally conscious society and promote the use of recycle-able bags for your shopping.
What I saw at the checking counter was just ridiculous... There was this family who was paying for a cartload of groceries and guess what they used to carry those groceries??!!!
New store bought plastic bags which they brought along with them as they knew that plastic bags were not going to be given out on Saturdays. May I repeat myself! NEW PLASTIC BAGS!! Those you go to sundry shops and buy in packs of 50s. Wow!! How else can you defeat the purpose or intent of the day so thoroughly than by buying your own plastic bag to carry your groceries?
If you were to bring along used plastic bags you recycled from previous purchases, I would understand.
If you were to pay the RM0.20 per bag from the supermarket because you forgot to bring a bag, I could also understand.
But bringing NEW plastic bags??!!! It's truly beyond me....
Are these people for real? Are they that stupid? Do they think the ruling was put in place to inconvenience them? and solely for that purpose? *roll eyes*
All I can say is that it will be a long long time more before Malaysians start being environmentally conscious and actual practice the 3 Rs - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. If a simple "No Plastic Bag" rule can be construed as such, what else can you expect?
